About the program and director . . . 

Welcome to the Sutherland Secondary School Music Department's web page! Important information can be found here regarding course material, upcoming trips, and concerts. The Music Department at Sutherland boasts three concert bands, concert choir, and two levels of jazz band. The music rooms are always buzzing with either singers or instrumentalists. Students are reminded that only music students are allowed in the music room unless previously authorized by Ms. Workman. Concert Choir only rehearses in the first semester but has a very busy festive season. Grade 8 and 9 Concert Band meets alternating days with PE. A class schedule has been distributed and there is a calendar outside the music room.
Senior Concert Band (Grades 10-12) meets at 7:30 AM on Wednesdays in first semester which will result in a one class spare in the second semester timetable. Junior Jazz Band meets Tuesdays and Fridays. Senior Jazz Band meets Mondays and Thursdays. 

Ms. Michelle Workman has been teaching at Sutherland since her practicum in 1998. She has a Bachelor of Jazz along with a Major in English and graduated from UBC's Education program. Along with concert band, concert choir and jazz band, she also teaches English and is working on her Masters of Technology Education. Ms. Workman can be contacted at mworkman@nvsd44.bc.ca. 

Are you interested in playing? There are a number of community ensembles within the North Shore. Ms. Workman currently plays (and drops) percussion in the Lynn Valley Black Bear Band which meets on Mondays in the Argyle Band Room. It’s a great group for all music lovers.
